How to determine your goal weight when starting your weight loss journey...

According to the National Institutes of Health, more than 30% of Americans are overweight (and 42% of overweight people are obese). A common question is how to determine your goal weight when starting your weight loss journey.

One of the first steps is to accurately assess your current weight. Here are some tips...

  1. Weigh yourself at the same time of day.
  2. Use the bathroom prior to stepping on the scale.
  3. Less clothing is best when stepping on the scale.

Additionally, consider any health issues contributing to the number on the scale. When starting your weight goal, a good place to begin is setting smaller, more obtainable goals.

Start with losing 5% of your weight, which can have significant improvements in your overall health. (This is just 10 pounds for someone that weighs 200 pounds!) The 5% weight loss can decrease your blood pressure, lower your risk for diabetes and lower your cholesterol. Also 10 extra pounds adds about 40 pounds of pressure on your knees. An obtainable start to your weight loss journey can quickly increase your energy and your ability to enjoy more activities.
